How Does Base64 Encoding Work?
Base64 encoding takes 3 bytes of binary data (24 bits) and breaks them into 4 groups of 6 bits each. Since 2⁶ = 64, each 6-bit chunk maps directly to one of 64 printable characters from the standard Base64 alphabet:
A–Z (characters 0–25)
a–z (characters 26–51)
0–9 (characters 52–61)
+ and / (characters 62 and 63)
= is used as padding if the input length is not a multiple of 3.
Frequently Asked Questions
Because Base64 translates 3 bytes of binary data into 4 ASCII characters, it increases the size of binary files by approximately 33%. However, embedding small icons and SVGs directly as Base64 eliminates HTTP request roundtrips, speeding up web page loading.
Yes! Our encoder uses the modern TextEncoder and TextDecoder web standards, ensuring characters in Japanese, Hindi, Spanish accents, and emojis (e.g. 🚀, 💻) encode and decode without distortion.
